Released

For the many long years
since your birth
I’ve hovered over you
like a mother eagle
Watching, waiting to swoop down
on all impending dangers.

Yet the time has come
when now you must
spread your wings
leaving the safety of home and nest
to seek new worlds
and meet new challenges.

As you depart I fly
frantically across the sky
calling to you
warning of approaching dangers.
Yet you with the optimism of youth
fly farther and higher
ignoring my cries.

Finally, in frustration
and exhausted
I retreat to the nest
to pray that our Creator
will guide you safely through
the blustery winds
of your youth.
