These Comfortable Chairs

(Christmas Banquet Skit – New Church)

Narrator: (Rap like, read to a drum beat.)
Stage Lights Dimmed for the first two lines. Mime Actors take their places.
Folks at our Church were contented, trenched in.
For seventy odd years this is where they had been.
(Stage lights on)
The organist one Saturday was playing church songs.
Firemen came, punched holes where they didn’t belong.
Our moving now was certain, we didn’t need it explained,
Roof’s gone; we’re exposed to the bugs, wind and rain.

Chorus Actors:
We’re praisin’ God… and singin’… Oh yes, and givin’ …
While sitting in these… gymnasium chairs.

Narrator: (Mime Actors enter)
Future Development, they started in earnest to look.
Tough going, church buildings don’t help city tax books.
Some searched up north, other looked in the south.
Seemed a central location wasn’t coming about.
God smiled, let us hurry, scurry and tire ourselves out.
He’s not constrained by our impatience and running about.

Chorus Actors:
We’re praisin’ God… and singin’… Oh yes, and givin’ …
While sitting in these… gymnasium chairs.

Narrator: (Mime Actors enter)
Now time had transpired Lincoln Park at last ready.
Then came the church plans and creativeness a-plenty.
Should we go up high or stay flat on the ground?
Steeple? Seating capacities? Decisions abound.
Colours, must be easy on eyes and be easy to keep.
Chairs comfortable, but not too or… people will sleep.

Chorus Actors:
We’re praisin’ God… and singin’. Oh yes and givin’.
While sitting in these… comfortable chairs.

Narrator: (Mime Actors enter)
Fund-raisers were a stretch, hard work, but fun.
God saw we were faithful, topped them off. Well done!
We have an American preacher and his fine family too.
Learning our Canadian ways, living in an igloo.
Have a modern church building, high Tec and state of the art.
Our mission is to show God’s love, He will change the heart.

Chorus Actors (in unison);
We’re praising God… AMEN and reaching out… , because
God doesn’t want us just sitting in these comfortable chairs.

Narrator:
We are eager, excited, a strong heritage past.
In God’s word we’ve been told this old world won’t last.
Till then, we’ll reach to the needy – there’s the Mustard Seed,
We’ll support our missions, praying, helping people in need.
So invite friends and neighbors and we’ll pack them in.
(Slowly) This Christmas, let’s celebrate together, because
The end of the ‘Story’ is…. (drum roll) God’s going to win! (Cymbal crash)

All actors in unison:
We’re praising God… AMEN and reaching out… AMEN, because
God doesn’t want us just sitting in these comfortable chairs.
